TADAAA!!!

It's been a long prosess, but finally here it is in all it's glory! The floor is still covered, to protect it from the final strokes of paint, the window trimmings have not been put back on and there are building materials lying around on the floor, but I wanted to show you the gorgeous teak cabinets while they're still pristine and uncluttered, before all my stuff moves back in and steels their thunder....

Everything is handmade in teak and oiled to a silky matt finish. That's what I love so much about wood, the finish, the smell and how it feels to the touch. I chose teak to make a better connection between the kitchen and the adjacent living room with my teak furniture. Mine is the only kitchen they've made in teak so far, so it's a one of a kind! The countertop is danish, pure white deliciously smooth stone. All the cabinets and drawers are wide, 80 cm,which adds to the horisontal impression. The counter forms an L, in addition to a separate wall with floor to roof cabinets.

My house has traditional coastal architecture, and my strategy is to contrast it with some 60s and 70s touches, whilst keeping the "bones" of the house, as Kylie over at Lucy Violet Vintage once so cleverly put it!

The guy who made the kitchen for me started the still very small company called Tingbø just a few years ago, and his kitchens and dining tables have already been published in major design magazines. It's so refreshing that the big companies get some competition from someone who stays true to good craftmanship and great materials. The company is based in Egersund, on my beloved southwestern coast, the home of the great pottery by that same name. They made the interior for the pottery museum that I featured in an earlier post, have a look here.

Tingbø has a great website, and I'm more than happy to spread the word about these great guys. Unfortuneately for some of you, the site is only in norwegian. There are some really nice photos though, so it's well worth having a look.
Enough talking, here's my new kitchen! I'm already deeply in love with it. I'll be showing it again when it's all done, and my Figgjo, Stavangerflint and, of course, Egersund pieces has moved in:-)

  1. I'm almost speechless with admiration! That's the most beautiful cabinetry I've ever seen. It truly rivals fine furniture. I know you must be ecstatic, and I'm so happy for you! I love your faucet and countertop too. It all works perfectly together. Bravo!

    1. Thank you so much, sweet Dana, those words really warm! I'm so glad you approve, I know you're a lady with the most exquisite taste! By the preview of your room divider, I know we're in for a real treat when it's time for your big reveal! I can't wait to see your fabulous new nest!
You're absolutely right, I really am extatic, and getting to know the great guy whose hands made it makes it even more precious.

  2. OMG Tove, it's beautiful. I just want to run my hands across that teak and open and close those drawers. It's simple, elegant, practical, beautifully designed and built, and the teak is the star. I love the slender bench top which almost disappears...
(it looks lovely against the vertical boards too, so glad you decided against tiling - which I suppose is what most people would've done)

    1. Thank you so much, Kylie, I'm so happy you like it, that means so much to me! I can hear you appreciate great materials too. After I saw these kitchens the first time, it was a waste of time to research further, I was already sold!!

I'm so glad you like the contrast to the vertical boards. This kind of interior cladding is repeated in several rooms of my house and are a strong part of the expression. Tiles didn't seem logical. Today we've had lamps over the counter installed, I'll show more soon:-) Have a great weekend!

  3. It's soooooo beautiful Tove!! I think I would just sit and stare at those stunning cabinets all day long! On second thought I would probably sit close enough so that I could touch them too! Best wishes for many, many happy years to come for you and your family in that beautiful kitchen.

    1. Thank you so much for those wishes, Francine! I have to admit, I actually HAVE been staring at them for days.... I'm quite silly that way! Now I'm moving in slowly, trying to find a system in all my stuff, and also trying not to clutter it! After a little while I have been recommended to oil the doors and drawers with teak oil. It's going to be a bit scary the first time, I'll have to test it inside a drawer I guess. I had some lamps installed today, I'll be back with a kitchen update shortly:-) wish you the greatest weekend!

    1. Thanks very much, I'm so glad you liked it! It's been a long prosess, and it's so rewarding to finally be done. You have a great blog too, I just joined! Lots of wonderful stuff there, and what a fitting name! I'm so excited to hear which Egersund set you bought, I just "closed the deal" on one too, which I'll pick up during the weekend. It's a "Korulen" tea set, the sunflower. I've been waiting for one to show up within driving distance. I'll post about it soon:-)

    1. Thank you, Anathalia! I'm in the middle of emptying boxes full of kitchen stuff, trying to figure out what should go where. I look forward to getting to the cooking- bit! I still have to figure out my new appliances:-) I'm really glad you like my new kitchen, thanks again!

  8. Tove, gorgeous kitchen. Such attention to detail, and the beautiful materials you chose are the perfect combination in contrast. The dark teak against all that white is stunning. I will be coming back for more!

    1. Oh, thank you so much! I'm so glad you like the way the cabinets contrast all the white. My former kitchen was the same color as the walls and blended in more with details that made it look like it was built as a part of the house structure. It didn't stand out. Like you, I prefer contrasts:-) I'm looking forward to showing you more!

    1. Don't worry, Pippa! I'm sooo glad you like it!! I'm all silly here, I keep smiling each time I enter the room, can't keep myself from touching that teak. Before, I was just annoyed... (with the state of the kitchen, that is:-) Best of all, my kids are so pleased! I never thought a couple of boys could show so much interest in a kitchen! Thanks for those sweet words:-)

  11. WOW! This is the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long time! This man is a true artist. The choice to use teak was brilliant and the minimal clean look without a protruding handle was a wonderful decision. Everything about this is perfect and I imagine you are so excited to get all your lovely things set in this space. What about the top? Is it quartz? What type of surface did you choose? Really beautiful! Congratulations.

    1. Thank you so much for joining and commenting, Stacey, I really appreciate those words, especially since they're coming from a lady of such exquisite taste like yourself! I have to admit I've been admiring your blog and your amazing house "undercover" for a while, without getting around to commenting...
I'm so glad you like my new kitchen, I love it to bits, I keep stroking that teak and have to pinch my arm a little bit to realize I finally have my dream kitchen:-) Great material surfaces was my top priority, fancy schmancy appliances not so much. Yes, the top is quarts, it's a Danish product which is an equivalent to Caesarstone, with more than 90 percent stone. It's pure white with a polished surface, very easy to clean.
Thanks again, Stacey, and do pop in again, it was really nice hearing from you:-)
