Thrifting update

How was your weekend? Good, I hope! I did some great bargains in my local Salvation army store this weekend. I popped in just before they closed on friday and came out five minutes later with a heavy box full of goodies.

The first piece I spotted was this lovely Scheurich vase that fits like a glove in my collection of reds and browns. Isn't it gorgeous, I think I might be in love...

Remember I told you in an earlier post I was in a thrift store that had heaps of Arabia Ruska, and how I was a good girl and resisted them? Well, this time they appeared in my Salvation army store. There was a stack of 12 dinner plates and a lovely dish on a plate. I'm collecting Stavangerflint Brunette, but the dinner plates never seem to turn up. There's a limit to how many sets that fits in a house, but at 10 kroner a plate (USD 1,80 or 1,35 in euros) who could resist? Designed by Ulla Procope during her time with Arabia (she worked there from 1948 to 68) they still look very modern. I had the lidded dish from before and together with the new dish on the plate they make a perfect pair for condiments. I love how the color varies from a warm chocolate to a very dark brown, and how the surface feels almost metallic.

I found this great caramel colored mid- century planter to go with my other two brown ones. Notice how the shapes of the three are almost identical? I love the color, yummy caramel. My favorite is still the Bay planter that my 11 year old son found, though! (to the right in the image below)

Speaking of planters, today I popped into my local garden center to pick up some cacti for my Figgjo butterdishes (Folklore and August by Turi Gramstad Oliver), which are missing their lids and will start their new lives as planters. I had to re- pot them to make them fit into the square pots, which is something I DO NOT RECOMMEND with cacti.... The one on the left, especially, was being a very bad cactus, and scratched my hands badly. I hope it'll enjoy its new life in the Figgjo, I don't think I'll ever re- pot it again...

My new Stavangerflint dish that I got on Etsy has arrived!! Right after I ordered it, I found another one in a local thrift, they'll make a great pair on my wall.

  3. Great finds Tove! Love your new German - he fits right in with the rest of the group. I certainly would not walk away from Arabia Ruska - especially at that price. Very brave of you to repot your cactus! I have never attempted such a feat. Did you use thick gloves? Those little needles mean business!

We watched Head Hunters last night. Have you seen it? Oh my, that house!! We loved the film but I want to watch it again just to have another peek at their home.

    1. Thank you:-) I wore my heavy duty garden gloves for the big cactus battle, but even those couldn't keep those needles out! As you said- they meant business!
Wow, I have to check out that movie! I love it when the story takes place in a beautiful house! Did you see The Ice Storm? When I studied architecture we went to see Philip Johnson's glass house in New Canaan. I've read somewhere that the house featured in The Ice Storm is located there. It's a great movie too...

  4. Oh Tove, that's what I call a thrifting (and cactus planting) bonanza! I tell you, it would be a miracle to find beautiful goodies like those in any of our op-shops, especially in one hit, and for those prices!

Cactus are tricky (and painful) to plant, but worth a few scratches especially when they're getting a lovely new home like yours have.

    1. Thank you, Kylie! On my local hunting grounds, it seems like there's not many people who share my taste, because I've noticed these things can sit on the shelves for a while. I've tried my luck in Oslo a couple of times (which is a 40 minute drive from here) , but there it seems good vintage stuff barely touch the shelves before it's gone....

    1. Thank you, Ray! The Scheurich was love at first sight:-) The cacti remind me of my home when I was a kid in the 70s, my mom had a whole collection in a large window. I always thought they looked so cool, but I remember how it was like getting too close to them too...

  6. Drooling over your wonderful finds! Ruska is a favorite of mine too, but I have only found serving pieces or cups and saucers, never the dinner plates! the planter are great too. It seems like we share the same color palette taste.

    1. I think we do, I always like what you find! It's funny how different things turn up at different places. Over here, I never find the Dansk teak candle holders or the little teak vikings. Figgjo, Stavangerflint and Arabia, appear more frequently, although certain patterns are more rare. The Ruska was really big here in its heydays, so luckily there's a lot around:-)

  11. Tongs, the BBQ variety will keep those pesky cacti in line! Love the Ruska, in abundance here in Australia! Love the plates, WG and pots! Love it all! I would thrift with you any day! :)

    1. I must admit I never thought of BBQ tongs! What a great idea, sounds like you've had some nasty encounters with the cheeky little fellas yourself:-)
You're so lucky to have so much Ruska where you live, it's amazing how certain things travel! Over here, it's impossible to find the Dansk stuff, like the teak candlesticks. I've seen that you have a lot of those both in Australia and the US. I seem to remember you've recently thrifted a whole Ruska set?
I can't imagine how much fun it would be to go thrifting with you, Pippa:-)
