On Thursday I found something amazing in a nearby thriftstore. A very
sweet lady runs it, and I've found several great pieces there. She had
spent a few hours unpacking new stock, and had put this out in the shop 3
minutes before I walked in the door and snatched it! That's what I call
timing:-) It's a large Digsmed Lazy Suzan, made around 1960 by Digsmed,
Denmark. Digsmed and Dansk pieces very rarely appear in thrifts here, I
suspect a lot of them emigrated to the US or stayed in the motherland.
It's
large, a whopping 40 cm across, in massive fine grained teak and
has a rich delicious color. It has two turntables and 8 smoke colored
glass bowls. They're all intact and the teak is in excellent condition.
The price was REALLY reasonable, I saw a similar one on the web that was
5 times what I paid... The storeowner has reserved something for me
that has been
on my wishlist for a long time, they just need to be unpacked
from her heap of boxes. Nothing spectacular or rare, just something
I've been lusting for and want to start collecting. I'll reveal what it
is soon, I hope:-)
I
recently found these Stelton place mats on sale. I hope it's not
because they will be discontinued, but I suspect it is... They're in a 5
mm thick felt, and have this great cutout pattern in the middle. Too
bad a plate will cover it, but you still have that richly textured,
wonderfully shaped mat. I love black with teak, that's why I decided on a
joint photoshoot:-)
And
what do you know- a new kid on the block, or handsome German, I guess
we like to call them:-) Can you spot the newcomer? It's the red- belted
brown Scheurich to the left!
Takk:-) Ja, din vase er jo helt samme modell!! Veldig fin samling du har!
DeleteDet är bara en liten del......=)
DeleteThe Lazy Susan was such a great find! It's so rare to come across one in such wonderful condition with all the pieces intact. I love your new Scheurich piece, and the placemats are very nice too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dana! Yes, I was so thrilled to find the Lazy Susan. Strangely enough, they're very rare here. And what are the odds for all 8 bowls to be intact as well as teak in mint condition?
DeleteDivine things esp. the WG collection! My mother went to Denmark in the 60s and brought home a truck-load of items. One of them was a lazy susan just like yours, but a little smaller. A few years ago she gave it to me for Mother's Day! I love it, and used it recently at an afternoon tea I went to. I'll dedicate a blog post for you soon, and I'll show you it. I love the sound the ball-bearings make when the tray spins.
ReplyDeleteReally?!? That's so exciting!! I love te sound of ball- bearings too:-) The little clicks are so great. I guess we're equally nerdy:-) SO amazing that your mum brought all those gems home, imagine if she knew that we'd drool over them 50 years later!! I'd love to see your lazy Susan:-)
DeleteHave an amazing weekend! xx
I want to hear those "clicks" MMMC talks about.
ReplyDeleteAre you going to use yours Tove? It's a beauty!
They were big here in the 70's at Chinese restaurants (but only in the 'really fancy' ones- ha!). Great fun for kids.
Oh thank you, Kylie! Come on over, I'll give it a spin for you:-) After seeing that yummy afternoon tea over at MMMC, I got really inspired and want to invite someone for tapas right away! I bet pretty soon the guys will find out they can use it for sweets:-)
DeleteThat is on my wish list. But I shan't call it lazy! Lucky you and lucky MMMC!
ReplyDeleteThank you Pippa, if I can get my paws in another one, it'll be on it's way to Australia! I agree, funny thing it's called lazy, the poor hardworking thing... MMMC's is even more precious, since it belonged to her mom. I so enjoyed reading her post and seeing her pictures, very inspiring!
DeleteI love Digsmed! Such a great find and so amazing that all the glass pieces were intact too! Now I really want to find one so I can hear the sound.
ReplyDeleteAnother handsome German in the house! Fantastic that they all get along so well :)
Another favorite is Stelton and those are fab placemats. I would have snatched them up as well.
Thank you Francine! I'm always impressed to see a 50 year old piece in such a good condition. And with glass pieces that slide off easily, it's extra impressive. I'm so glad you like it. Oh, yes, the handsome Germans get along just fine:-) They show up quite often over here, so I've narrowed it down to a red- themed collection and a neutral- toned one.
DeleteI don't find placemats I like very often and didn't even know Stelton made them, so finding some that were right up my alley- and on sale- was great!
Difficult to pinpoint a favorite from this week's finds. I found a large Digsmed lazy susan with round inserts a while back. A thing of beauty, but too large to store, so I sold it. It was lovely while it lasted ;)

DeleteThat's exciting, I don't think I've seen one with round inserts! I agree, they are rather large to store. There's always a limit to how much you can keep... I'm trying to be really selective as my cupboards are pretty crowded, but I'm weak when I'm confronted with temptation:-)
Wow!!!
